The Latest Findings on Breast Feeding Benefits
This article gives the most recent research results showing why mothers should breast feed their babies. The benefits include less diarrhea and fewer infections of the intestines and lower respiratory tract in babies up to six months of age. For the mothers, breast feeding reduces the risk of premenopausal breast cancer, ovarian caner and osteoporosis. To be most beneficial, breast feeding should start in the first hour of the babies life and continue exclusively for four to six months.

Feather fossils linked to dinosaur
A team of international scientist teams have come across two Chinese fossils which help to support the claim that birds evolved from dinosaurs. The fossils that are thought to be of dinosaurs is of an animal that can run swiftly, flapping feathered wings and fanning outimpressive tail feathers , but unable to fly. The fossils according to the scientists to be from 120 million to 136 million years ago. This time span is said help support the claim that birds evolved from dinosaurs. The earliest bird was called Archaeopteryx and has been dated back to 140 million to 150 million years ago. The theory was proven that birds came from dinosaurs.

Research Scientist, Ryuzo Yanagimachi from the University of Hawaii, announced Friday evening (June 26th) that he had successfully cloned a mouse. Though he did not use the term "clone", instead calling it producing mice without the use of live sperm. Since cloning was first announced 15 months ago by a group of Scottish researcher no one had been able to duplicate the results. Cloning has cause quit a controversy not only in the science community but also in the general public. Though cloning could produce many life saving results, there are amany fears, such as, experiments going wrong creating deadly deseases, etc.

Diabetes threatens advances in heart disease
Although research shows that the occurance of heart disease has dropped about 50% in the past 40 years, the risk for diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. The risk increased from 9% per year between the years of 1987 and 1996. Diabetes is an illness which causes the body to have either excessive or lack of glucose. This can in turn cause tissue damage, kidney disease, blindness, and eventually death. Obesity is not the only cause of diabetes. Sedentary lifestyles also add to the risk, proving again that excersize is importatnt to the human body to aid in disease prevention. Better eating habbits and fitness should reduce the overall risk.

DIETING MAKES YOU FORGET
Are you currently on a diet? If so this article may be of some interest to you. Mike Green from the Institute of Food Research has experimented with the idea that dieters tend to perform more poorly on mental tasks than those people who are not dieting. The researchers are blaming poor nutrition, lack of energy, and lack of concentration. Two different experiments were conducted and the results of both were extremely similar. Those people who were choosing to slim down performed the same as a person who had just drunk two units of alcohol. The researchers advice is to eat sensibly and maintain a constant diet.

The Age of Aquariums
This article talked about some of the many aquariums around the world. The focus of the article was on one that just opened in Lisbon. This state of the art aquarium has a 1.2 million gal. tank that is now home to more than 8,000 specimens of 250 species. It is arranged so that predator and prey can swim together and people can enjoy their beauty without disturbing them. These exhibits depict the oceans around the world with creatures big and small from each of them. Some examples include giant clams, bluefish, otters, kelp, sharks, and pygmy angelfish. This gives many people an opportunity to see things which they would otherwise not see.

White House Issues Pollution Reduction Release
This week, a release was issued from Washington that is supposed to reduce tha amount of carbon emissions annually. This plan is projected to reduce these emissions in an amount equivalent to that emitted by 850,000 cars. This release was in addition to the Presidential plan from October of 1997. One part of this plan includes tax cuts in order to improve research and development of energy efficiency. The majority of the funding for such research and development will be spent in the major carbon-emitting sectors of the economy.

Dieting Makes You Forget
There are other disadvantages to dieting, particularly for those who yo-yo on and off diets. For one thing I have read in a couple of different places that the more times a person goes on a diet their bodies adjust to the yo-yo eating habits and burns less fat stores each time. Therefore, it becomes more and more difficult to loss weight each time they go on a diet. This again supports a more even food intake but with less overall consumption.

All About Rain Forest Depletion
I would guess that there are one of two groups or both that are primarily responsible for the deforestation of these areas: The big corporations, probably based in the US, who have found cheaper alternatives to producing their goods or the locals, who have found a cash cow in an otherwise poor economic environment. Either way it is the demand of the American people that is the root cause of the problem. So what can by done by normal citizens to help eliminate the demand and stop or own companies from destroying these rich biological habitats?

Georges Ohsawa, the founder of modern macrobiotic philosophy, introduced a diet solely based on brown rice. Brown rice enabled the body's natural cleansing functions to work free of any input of rich and unbalancing foods while still maintaining a fundamental level of balanced nutrition. Much disease originates in intestinal malfunction which results in poor blood quality. The brown rice diet can lead to a cure of many chronic conditions.

I agree that dieting is hard on the body and mind. Our society, however, is based on instant gratification. This is the reason why I think fad diets sell so well. They promise fast results with little or no work involved. Americans just waste their money on empty promises, and rarely see the results that they expect. I wish the public would be more aware of what they are putting in their body, and research any diet they want to go on before they waste they put their health at risk.

I do not see how this fossil proves that birds evolved from any where. Dinosaurs are pre-historic creatures. We have birds today that can run, flap their wings and still not fly -- what about the ostrich? Could it be that this fossil is merely that of a pre-historic ostrich-type creature? I don't see the link!

Chemical in marijuana may help stroke victims
Researches have found that the use of cannabidol, one of the 40 chemicals in marijuana, has been shown to help animal brain cells fight toxic chemicals that are caused by a stroke. Free radicals are stopped by the drug, in turn helping the brain cells to get fresh blood. However, smoking pot does not produce enough cannabidiol in the body to be beneficial. The chemical is only helpful when taken in large doses, and marijuana smoke inhalation will not help with strokes. So far, the testing has been done only on animals, and scientist are not sure if the drug will help people.

A good part of the problem with mutating bacteria is that doctors have and continue to over-prescribe antibiotics. Further to that point Americans is general overuse medicines. For example, when someone has a headache they take Tylenol or something like it. A headache is our bodies way of telling us that there is something wrong. Taking Tylenol only eliminates the symptoms and does nothing to solve the root cause of the problem. I think we need to quit bopping so many pills and start addressing the root causes of our ailments.

Nations seek ban on toxic chemicals
I watched a show on TLC last week called "The Killer Viruses". One segment was on chemical weapons. They talked about how many nations have banned together to eliminate these weapons but that the most radical nations Libia and Iraq still produce them. They showed the rusults of their use in the Iran, Iraq war. Very small amounts wiped out hundreds of thousands at a time. Given that most of these countries hate the US, its not all that unlikely that we could be victims of these weapons. This is an area where I think the greatest amount of pressure needs to be exerted to wipe this threat out.

An other part on the TLC show "The Killer Viruses" talked about the various natural viruses. An interesting segment was how influenza (flu) is still one of the most dangerous because it mutates every year. The vaccine used one year probably will not work next year. It takes 3-6 weeks to develop a vaccine after it is first identified. We have been fortunate that most flus start in Asia which gives us enough time to develop the vaccine before it gets here. It has been about 30-40 years since the last pandemic. One of the longest periods without a pandemic of flu since we have been recording these statistics.

Beetle New Threat to Honeybees
Officials from Florida have discovered beehives infested with the South African small hive beetle. The beetles like to eat honey and pollen and lay eggs in the honeycomb cells. Then, the beetles defecate in the honey, making it undesirable for both the bees and humans. If the bee colonies were healthy, they could probably fight the beetles off. But the bees are recovering from an attack of mites, which killed 95% of the U.S. wild colonies. The honeybee is an important pollinator to crops such as apple, blueberries, zucchini, alfalfa, cantalopes, cucumbers, not to mention numerous flowers.

Dieting Makes you forget
Dieting also has other negative aspects besides poor memory. In a recent article in "Prevention Magazine", researchers stated that excessive dieting can cause loss of muscle tissue and reduced metabolism. This is especially true in individuals that lose weight and quickly regain it. The important rule to remember for calorie counting is to multiply your weight times 10. If you eat any less calories, your body goes into a "starvation mode", and holds on to as much fat as possible to store for reserves. So, if a person weighs 150 lbs., it would be advisable not to eat any less than 1,500 calories a day when on a weight reduction diet.

Janice brings up a good point when she said that we needed to take a stand against rainforest depletion. Our natural resources are being reduced everyday, and if we do not find alternative means to survival, mankind soon be in trouble. Rainforests and other resources need to be our nation's number one priority. Water and electricity needs to be conserved and our farming plots need to rest periodically to let the minerals build back up into the soil. Politicians need to stop thinking about money and businesses, and perhaps transfer funds from lesser important budgets into a program to help our resources. They are not trying hard enough.

Laural's article on toxic chemicals raises a question about household products. How many "mildly" toxic chemicals are in the products that we use daily? Many lotions and hair conditioners contain a substance called propolyne-glycol, and it is the main ingredient in anti-freeze! Also, many deodorants contain aluminum which has been linked to alzheimer's disease. Should we go back to a more "natural" way of living. There are enough toxic chemicals floating around in the air, and we probably have more in our homes than we realize.

A level of 106 exceeds the federal air standards. The alert is meant to warn these target groups as well as encourage businesses and the general public to reduce their use of pollutant causing devices. The question is do people change what they are doing when there is a smog alert?

A Kidney Stone Cure?
According to a study published in July's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, tiny microorganisms, known as nanobacteria, may be the reason some people form kidney stones. It has been suspected in the past that a high concentration of calcium in the kidney was the cause of these painful afflictions, but researchers have recently found evidence that infectious bacteria use calcium and phosphate to build protective shells. These shells may then act as seeds for larger calcium deposits(kidney stones). If bacteria is to blame, antibiotics may be used to treat the stones instead of the current pulverization by shock waves.

The fact is that since the cloning process takes the egg and DNA sample from the cumulus cells that only exist on the ovaries, all of the clones are female. Since the average success rate for this type of cloning is only 1 in every 100, researchers have found mice, with a gestation period of only 20 1/2 days to be much more efficient.

Rain Cleans the Air - Smog Alert Cancelled
It is amazing that this area has seen an increase in the amount of Smog Alerts. It's frightening!! Not only do I also wonder if people really are doing their share to help reduce the smog problem, but I must wonder just how much effect the reduction of trees in a metropolitan area has on the increase of smog. If we didn't destroy our precious woodlands in order to expand, we would have more trees to turn the carbon-dioxide back into very needed oxygen. It makes you stop and think about whether we really are advancing by expanding.

This newsnote provides some good arguments to support why women are better suited for space than men. However, I do not agree with most of these. First of all, I believe that men would be able to get along better on a long trip than women. Furthermore, I would think that women would have more medical concerns than a man would. I can't imagine being in space with cramps and a menstraul cycle to worry about. Though I do agree that women think more about situations than men do, I am not sure as to whther or not I agree that women deal better with chronic stress. But at least the article is a step in the right direction for women.

After reading this newsnote, I have to admit that this is about the grossest thing I have ever heard. Though I am sure that this was an effective treatment method in the past, modern medicine should have other more effective ways that would have similar results. If I had a wound, the only way I would allow my doctor's to treat me with "maggot therapy" is if I was unconscious, or if there was absolutely no alternative. Then even I would have to be put to sleep. Just the idea of this therapy makes me sick to my stomach. I think it is unsanitary, and could prabably cause some long term negative effects. Water is best for kids
In regards to Elizabeth's article on water for children, it seems that one common mistake that parents make is giving their children "Kool-Aid" to drink. This usually contains many artificial dyes, and contains about a cup of sugar per pitcher. Another thing to consider is the amount of water children get at school. It is pretty common for the children to only be allowed water breaks two times a day. In fact, when I was in school, we would stand in line at the drinking fountain waiting our turn. I remember the teacher counting to five, and that was all the water we were allowed to have. I was often forced to stop drinking.

I could eat all of the carbs I wanted, and I still lost weight. It's true that you do need some fat in your diet, but are low fat diets that bad if you lose dangerous body fat? My mother has kidney failure and has received a transplant from my sister. When she asked her doctor how to keep her children from getting diabetes and kidney failure, he simply stated "Do not let your kids get fat!" Any weight loss/maintenance that works for me I will use. Nicotine May Be Tougher on Blacks
I thought this article was extremely interesting. I found many articles supporting that it was true. In an article from the web, stated how for some reason blacks take in more cotinine per cigarette than whites. Therfore, they have higher health risks and have a hard time to clean out their lungs if they do quit smoking in the future. Four of the other articles agreed with this statement. Blacks also have a hard time breaking dowen the cotinine in their systems.

I also found this article interesting, at first I thought how disgusting until I found out more information on the subject. The maggot therapy worked especially well when treating osteomyelitis. The maggots are also used on open wounds, the maggots eat their way through the infected areas until they reach the healthy skin. In all of the tests they have run, the maggots have never bothered the healthy skin. If I had to make a choice to save a body part with maggot therapy, I couldn't refuse!

Nicotine may be tougher on blacks
I am really surprised by the findings in this newsnote. This is because, as far as I know, there are more white smokers than there are black smokers. Statistics and reasearch has proven this to be a fact. Because of this, it seems almost ironic that nicotine has more harmful effects on blacks than on whites. These findings should prove helpful by disuading black potential smokers from smoking, and to help black smokers kick the habit. This information also leads me to wonder if this is one of the reasons that many cigarrette ads are now being geared toward a black audience.

us syphillis rate hits record low
The record low drop in the amount of syphillis cases/year is one of the best pieces of information I have heard, concerning diseases, in a while. I believe this is a direct result of the Aids scare in America. Americans are now more educated about safe sex than ever before. As a result, Americans have acquired a more conscious level of thinking when it comes to sex. Though Aids cases do not seem to be declining, it is great to see that the once very dangerous STD syphillis is almost becoming obselete in America. Maybe we are on our way to winning the war on STD's.

If you're tired of popping an aspirin everytime your head starts to hurt, new research on alternative therapies has shown promising results for headache relief. Some alternative therapies include stretching, acupressure and herbs. Stretching is helpful if headaches are caused by poor posture or being hunched behind a computer all day. Acupressure involves pressing specific spots on your body to cause the release of endorphins, which are natural pain killers. Some herbs that can be helpful to headache sufferers include ginger, chamomile, peppermint and passion flower.

Pract- itioners have known for a long time that a change in diet eliminates the problem. Some suggest changing to a vegetarian diet may work. Adding flaxseed to your diet can relieve pain and inflammation. Avoiding foods such as red wine, chocolate, aged cheeses, and citrus fruits can also eliminate the constrict and dilate problem.

This might be the result of clogged nasal passages that make it difficult to sleep soundly. Regular doses of inhaled coricosteroids, which reduce swelling in the nose and nasal passeges, improved sleep and lessened fatigue during the day among allergy sufferers, they found. Dr Timothy O. NADH- The Energy Booster
I think that NADH is a wonderful discovery. Anything that would be able to help people with Alzheimers is a great contribution to society. My grandmother had Alzheimers, and it was tragic to slowly watch her memory slip away from her. At the end, she didn't remember me, and could barely remember her own children. If NADH can prevent someone elses grandmother from going through that memory loss, I think that would be wonderful.

Our Aging Cells
OK. So you couple this information with all of the cloning information we've being hearing about and what you get is a whole bunch of perfect people that will live forever. What concerns me about this is that we haven't figured out how to solve our overpopulation problems as it is. Now we will be able to extend our life expectancy indefinately. We've got a lot of problems to solve before we unleash this type of thing.

Decline in Frogs
The alarming part of this is that the frog population is declining across the world not just in a specific area. To me that would mean that it is not due to a microscopic organism like a bacteria or virus. This would indicate to me that it is a change in the world environment that is affecting them. Neither of the two alternative provided will have posative affects on humans: pollution and ultraviolent exposure. However these are two problems we have known about for a long time but choose to do little to change.

TIM, ST. JOHN'S WORT CONTAINS HYPERICIN, A PHOTOSENSITIZING SUBSTANCE THAT REACTS WITH LIGHT TO CAUSE BURNS IN LIGHT-SKINNED PEOPLE. IT'S REALLY NOT AN ODD OCCURRANCE, BUT A COMMON ONE. ALSO, ANTI-DEPRESSANTS USUALLY TAKE 6 WKS TO HAVE AN EFFECT, WHICH IS BROKEN DOWN INTO 2 WK. INTERVALS; 1-2 WKS OF CLOSE SUPERVISION, MINIMAL SUPERVISION, AND NO SUPERVISION. AFTER SIX WEEKS, THE SAFETY AND THERAPUTIC RANGES HAVE BEEN REACHED AND THE PATIENT CAN CONTINUE USAGE OF THE DRUG. JUST THOUGHT YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW!

I THINK THIS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SCIENTISTS PLAYING GOD. WE WERE PUT HERE FOR A REASON AND WE ARE TAKEN AWAY FOR A REASON. IN MY OPINION, ITS ALL A PART OF A PLAN, AND THAT IS NOT A PLAN TO BE MESSED WITH. MANY RESEARCHERS NEED TO BE DIRECTING THEIR EDUCATION AND INTELLECT TO LORE IMMEDIATE PROBLEMS-i.e. CANCER, AIDS. CERTAIN MATTERS SHOULD BE LEFT WELL ENOUGH ALONE. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MATTERS.

I found this article very interesting because I have allergies. Not only do clogged nasal passages cause sleep deprivation but can cause "sinus headaches" which make it difficult to get a good nights sleep. I think more doctors should look into the positive effects of these inhaled steroids.

I have had terrible migrains lately. I believe my diet has caused these migrains. I happen to eat alot of chocolate, fruit and drink alot of caffine. I do notice I have these headaches more when I abstain from drinking caffeine. These migrains may be a result of caffine withdrawl. I am going to try to add flaxseed to my diet and hopefully be able to kick my caffeine habbit, but still eat my choclate.

I think this is a great article except that depression is a very serious condition. If this safe herb is sold as an over the counter antidepresant I think it could cause harm to some people. If someone is clinically depressed they should consult a doctor and not take treament into their own hands. Don't get me wrong, people should be able to have access to inexpensive and effective treatments for depression but they sould not be able to have access to something that could also hurt them.

The thing that is really scary about this is that we are long over due for a flu pandemic. It has been nearly 40 years since the last world wide flu virus broke out. As you can tell from the numbers listed in this article the number of casulties from one of these pandemics can be in the 10s of millions. Secondly, maybe we are better off just leaving this virus frozen for eternity instead of stirring up the pot, so to speak.

I understand that we should know about it incase it comes back, but couldn't we spend our money on other diseases that are affecting so many people now? I am sure AIDS researchers could use that money. Let the dead go ...

What a great idea vegetable vaccines are! I had never heard of this until now, but edible vaccines would be a wonderful invention. It would be so much easier to vaccinate children and adults alike, if we could eliminate the pain and mental trauma of getting shots. It would also be easier to make sure everyone got vaccinated if the shots were more affordable and available to everyone.

But, finding a way to keep our own cells dividing is very interesting. I wonder where all of this research will lead to.

I don't see how these scientists can learn anything about the disease by exhuming these frozen corpses. Do freezing temperatures really preserve a dead body well enough that scientists can determine the origin of this illness? I do think that if the disease has never been studied before that it should be studied. I just don't know if these frozen corpses would really give the scientists the answers they were looking for.

On the other hand it could help cure people with disease that kill of RBC's and WBC's. If this enzyme is approved by the FDA I feel that many people will question if it is morally right to "play god" with our dying cells.

One must stand or sit up and ingest the pill with a full glass of water. This avoids the more irritating side effect of ulcerations in the esophagus.

I wonder what the corelation is between this and the study all ready mentioned(Clondronate allegedly breaks down a hormone that stimulates tumor growth in bone marrow)? It seems that Clondronate is in the same class of drugs as Alendronate that was mentioned in another newsnote. Both are biphosphonates and have poor intestinal absorption.

Decline in the Frogs Worrying Scientists
I have also read articles that suggest the very things killing us are killing the frogs at an even quicker rate. It is so difficult to re-train ourselves though. For instance, the u.v. light exposure attributes to their deaths yet we throw ouselves out into the sun ( for hours at a time) in hopes of getting a good tan. I know I think this way automatically. I think to myself, gee i didn't get any sun this summer or I need to lay by the pool I need some color. I have to stop myself and re-program, the sun is bad for my skin. We as a society have some bad habits.
